Multifocal and Accommodating IOLs

Multifocal and accommodating lenses are exciting developments in vision correction after cataract surgery. These lenses may grant you the ability to be less dependent on glasses for long distance, intermediate and near vision all at once. They are presbyopia correcting lenses. Please click here to take our Premium Lens Self Test as a starting point, and read below to have a better understanding on these lenses.

Premium lenses are only appropriate for some patients, and your eye surgeon or ophthalmologist can help you determine if you are a good candidate. It is also important to understand that most patients with multifocal lenses will have halos or glare around lights in dark conditions, and some may notice that they will need more light to read.

During the proper selection of the best IOL for you, as decided by you and your eye specialist, there are a number of tests that must be performed to allow for computer formulas to choose the best lens power for your eye. Despite all of our advanced technology, please keep in mind that you still may need glasses or contact lenses to have the best vision allowed after surgery.

These multifocal and accommodating lenses (presbyopia correcting lenses) are designed to both replace cataracts and correct presbyopia, greatly reducing dependence on glasses for both near and distance vision. Most premium lens recipients find that they can resume their favorite hobbies and routine activities, such as reading and golfing, with an increased freedom from glasses.

The Crystalens AO® is an artificial lens implant that can treat both a person’s cataracts and presbyopia. Crystalens® was modeled after the human eye. Like the natural lens, it is a lens implant that uses the eye muscle to flex and accommodate in order to focus on objects in the environment at different distances. Crystalens® may dynamically adjusts to your visual needs.

Toric Lenses

These IOLs allow your ophthalmologist/eye surgeon to correct both cataracts and astigmatism at once during cataract surgery. Astigmatism is a condition in which the shape of your cornea is more like half of a football, rather than half of a basketball. Because of this irregular shape, light is not focused on the center of the retina (as it should be) leading to blurred vision. During surgery, your eye surgeon replaces the cataract-affected lens in your eye with a new lens, known as an intraocular
lens (IOL). You can choose an IOL that can correct astigmatism as well as cataracts, allowing you to enjoy more activities with reduced dependency on glasses. Toric IOLs are not multifocal or accommodating lenses, therefore, they do not treat presbyopia.
