Laser vision correction is used to treat patients with myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and/or astigmatism.  You should have a stable correction/refraction that has not changed recently, and your eyes should be normal and without disease. Also, your cornea must be thick enough for the laser vision procedure to be safely done, without leading to post-operative troubles.

What is your age?

Patient age is a very important factor in determining if someone is a good candidate for laser vision correction.  In general, you should be old enough for your prescription to become stable (late teens to mid 20s), and young enough to where you have not developed significant cataracts (people may begin to develop significant cataracts in their late 50s to early 60s).

Do you have any health conditions?

There are many health and eye conditions than may lead to your laser vision correction result to be less than optimal.  For this reason, you should have a comprehensive laser vision correction evaluation to determine whether you are a good candidate.  Please inform your doctor of any and all health problems and medications that your are taking.

The following is a list of conditions that may have a negative affect on your laser vision correction result:

  • Dry Eyes
  • Previous eye trauma
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Macular degeneration
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus or other Autoimmune Disorders
  • Glaucoma
  • Keratoconous or other Corneal disorders
  • Lazy eye or Amblyopia
  • Keloid scars after surgery
  • Some medications such as Accutane or Imitrex
  • Recent Contact Lens Wear – please make sure that you do not wear your soft contacts for a period of 2 weeks and hard contacts for a period of 6 week prior to your laser vision correction evaluation.
